Welcome to Class One
Year 1 and Year 2
Autumn Term 1
Class One have learnt about Rio, the Olympics, Dinosaurs and Autumn.
Class One enjoyed learning about Brazilian culture, with a special focus on Rio as a city and as the host of the 2016 Olympic Games.
Class One held our own Mini Olympics. We participated in a variety of sports including golf, cycling, football and athletics. We looked at the Olympic values of friendship, respect, excellence, determination, courage, inspiration and equality. The children worked extremely hard all day, so they all received a gold medal at the closing ceremony.
St Hilda's RC Primary School went on a whole school sponsored walk to raise funds for our school. Everyone was wrapped up warm as the weather was against us. We set off on our walk with help from governers and parents. We looked for signs of the seasons changing. We posed for lots of pictures!
In the Autumn term, Class One studied dinosaurs. We learned all about the different types of dinosaurs; how they lived, what they ate, and many more interesting facts. We made our very own dinosaur worlds. So interesting in fact, that Class One decided to open a 'Dinosaur Museum' to allow parents the chance to come and see all of the fabulous work on this topic. Great fun was had by all!
Bishop Terry came to visit St Hilda's and Class One sung a song to welcome him!
Key Stage 1 Multi-Skills at Caedmon College
Class One attended a multi-schools session at Caedmon College Whitby. We demonstrated our physical prowess in various activities! We had a fantastic time and did our school proud.
In November we had our school disco. We had lots of fun dancing and singing to the music!
We began our preparations for Christmas in November by participating in Whitby's Lantern Parade. Class One helped Class Two and Class Three to carry two specially made lanterns from Pannett Park, down to the Christmas market on the marina and enjoyed watching the switching on of the Christmas lights and the celebratory fireworks. We all carried our individual lanterns and shone brightly with fairy lights and decorations!
We certainly enjoyed the festivities in Class One this year! Our nativity play, 'The Little Owls and the Star' went down a treat and was enjoyed by Class One and audiences alike. We also wore our Christmas jumpers with the the rest of school on 'Christmas Jumper Day' and played games and ate treats at our Christmas party.
'Moon Zoom' was our next topic in Class One. Space, the planets and aliens were all explored. Class One particularly enjoyed designing and making their own pair of underpants when reading the story 'Aliens Love Underpants.' We had some great designs!
Safer Internet Day 2017
Tuesday 7th February marked 'Safer Internet Day 2017.' We learned all about the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology at school and at home.
Of course Class One enjoyed their pancakes on Shrove Tuesday!
Paws, Claws and Whiskers
Class One enjoyed their topic of ' Paws, Claws and Whiskers' where we studied animals. We learned about many different types of animals and their habitats and did lots of animal art work, including making animal silhouettes.
Class One went back to Caedmon College to compete in the Quad Kids competition. We all did really well and had great fun.
Our sporting involvement also extended to a gymnastics meeting at Eskdale School. We showed great balance, power and agility.
Easter Egg Hunt
In April, Class One took part in an Easter Egg Hunt around school. We enjoyed searching for the eggs and filling up our baskets.
Tour de Yorkshire 2017
On 28th April, the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race passed through Whitby. To celebrate, Class One held their very own Tour de Yorkshire relay race, which also included some maths and literacy activities along the way!
We celebrated 'Science Day' in Class One by conducting lots of experiments. Some of our favourites included colour mixing and making rainbow water.
Treat Day/Water Fight
After all of Class One's hard work, Miss Jackson and Mars Sedman thought the children deserved a 'treat day.' We played board games, played outside, and chose our activities all day. The definite highlight for the Year Two boys was their special choice after completing their Key Stage One tests. They chose to have a water fight - with Miss Jackson and Mrs Sedman - and it is fair to say it will be remembered for a very long time! The pictures say it all!
